Lantern Bay Park 25111 Park Lantern Road The signature Dana Point park. A wide bluff-top lawn sitting directly above Dana Point Harbor and Doheny State Beach, with paved loop paths, mature pines for shade, picnic tables, a playground, restrooms, and the Smythe Bros. Amphitheater. It is a designated wedding ceremony site and one of the better sunset spots in South County that does not require a hike. Leashed dogs are welcome.
Salt Creek Beach Park (Bluff Park) Off Ritz Carlton Drive at Pacific Coast Highway, Monarch Beach The grassy bluff above Salt Creek, managed by OC Parks. Big open lawn, unobstructed Catalina sunsets, and a paved path that runs the length of the bluff before dropping down toward the sand. Popular with kite flyers and picnic crowds. Leashed dogs are permitted on the bluff-top park and paved path, but not down on the beach.
Sea Terrace Park Pacific Coast Highway and Niguel Road, Monarch Beach Ocean views, open turf, and one of the city’s five Dog Fun Zones. This is the Monarch Beach option for residents who want an off-leash run without driving inland.
Heritage Park 34400 Old Golden Lantern Heritage Park had the most meaningful upgrade of any Dana Point park this year. In June 2026 the city cut the ribbon on a rebuilt Dog Fun Zone that grew from 2,500 square feet to 11,500 square feet, more than four times the original footprint. The single enclosure was replaced with two separate play areas, plus fresh sod and upgraded fencing. The park also has benches, ocean views, path lighting, picnic tables, and a wedding ceremony site.
Pines Park 34941 Camino Capistrano, Capistrano Beach A bluff-top park with Torrey pines, barbecues, benches, drinking fountains, and one of the most underrated ocean panoramas in the city. Quieter than Lantern Bay and a local favorite for morning coffee.
Del Obispo Park 34052 Del Obispo Street The city’s active-recreation hub: baseball fields, basketball, tennis courts, playground, restrooms, and picnic tables. This is where organized youth sports happen in Dana Point.
Strand Vista Park Selva Road, above Strands Beach A narrow bluff-edge park with benches and a walking path overlooking the Strands coastline. Excellent whale and dolphin watching from December through April. Leashed dogs are welcome in the park itself, though the switchback trails and beach access below it are off limits to pets.
Creekside Park and Crystal Cove Park 25743 Stonehill Drive and 25044 Via Elevado Two neighborhood parks that both carry Dog Fun Zones. Creekside adds a half basketball court, playground, restrooms, and picnic tables. Crystal Cove Park is smaller, with benches, ocean views, and path lighting.

The Best Trails and Walking Routes in Dana Point
Salt Creek Beach Trail The most-used walking route in Monarch Beach. A paved path runs from the Salt Creek bluff-top parking area down past the Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach and along the sand, then continues north toward the Ritz-Carlton bluffs. Roughly two miles round trip with a manageable grade. Leashed dogs are fine on the paved bluff sections above the sand.
Dana Point Bluff Top Trail A flat coastal walk through the Lantern District with benches, a pedestrian bridge, and continuous ocean views. Access it at Violet Lantern and El Camino Capistrano, or at Amber Lantern and Santa Clara. This is the easiest ocean-view walk in the city and the one most residents fold into a daily routine.
Dana Point Headlands: Hilltop Park and Harbor Point Park The Headlands Conservation Area delivers the single best view in Dana Point, looking down over the harbor, Doheny, and the open Pacific. Interpretive trails connect to the Nature Interpretive Center. Note carefully: dogs are prohibited on all Headlands trails and in these parks under city ordinance. This is a habitat protection area, and enforcement is real.
Doheny State Beach Multi-Use Trail A flat paved path running the length of Doheny, good for walking, jogging, and cruiser bikes. State Parks permits leashed dogs on the multi-use trail and in parking lots and the day-use picnic area, but not on the sand or in the water at any time.
Dana Point Harbor Boardwalk The waterfront loop past the marina, Baby Beach, and the Ocean Institute is the most social walk in town, with a heavy concentration of dog-friendly patios in the Lantern District at the end of it. Flat, stroller-friendly, and about a mile end to end.
Strands Switchback and Funicular Access The dramatic engineered descent from Strand Vista Park to Strands Beach, including the free funicular. Worth doing at least once for the views. Dogs are not permitted on the South Strand Switchback Trail, the Mid and Central Strand access trails, the funicular, or Strand Beach Park.

Dana Point Dog Rules, Explained
Dana Point is genuinely dog-friendly, but the rules are more specific than in Laguna Beach or Newport Beach, and they trip up new residents constantly. Three things to know.
1. Dogs are not allowed on the sand anywhere in Dana Point. Unlike Laguna Beach, which permits leashed dogs on the sand outside summer daytime hours, Dana Point prohibits dogs on its beaches. That includes Salt Creek, Strands, Doheny, and Capistrano Beach. Baby Beach and the harbor beaches follow the same restriction.
2. Five Dog Fun Zones offer legal off-leash play. Creekside Park, Crystal Cove Park, Heritage Park, Sea Canyon Park, and Sea Terrace Park each contain an enclosed leash-free area. Owners must stay in close proximity and be able to re-leash immediately. Heritage Park is now the largest of the five by a wide margin.
3. The Headlands and Strand access trails are entirely off limits to pets. City ordinance prohibits dogs and other pets, service dogs excepted, at Hilltop Park, Harbor Point Park, the South Strand Switchback Trail, Strand Beach Park including the revetment trail, the Mid and Central Strand access trails, the funicular beach access, and the Dana Point Preserve.
